Jesus Prays in Gethsemani

Jesus went out and made His way as His custom, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples accompanied Him. On reaching the place, He said to them, "Pray that you may not be put to the test." He withdrew from them about a stone's throw, then went down on His knees and prayed in these words: "Father, if it is Your will, take this up from Me; yet not My will but Yours be done." In this anguish, He prayed with even greater intensity, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. Then He rose from prayer and came to His disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted with grief.

Lk 22:39-45

Reflection: Think of the loneliness of Jesus when not one of His disciples found the strength to Him company in His agony. Then think of the loneliness of those who have no friends, no home, no hope, no future. Think of their feelings of depression, of their sense of insecurity and despair. What resolve can we make to help these victims of neglect?

The Water of Baptism

The Church celebrates the life-giving power of the waters of Baptism. The priest blesses the water, then plunges the Eastern candle into the water of the baptismal font to show that Jesus is present.

During the liturgy of Baptism, the priest baptizes someone who has been prepared for it earlier. The whole congregation renews its baptismal vows and sings the Liturgy of the Saints.

Water is a symbol of life and death. The stories in the old Testament show that water has the power to destroy life.

In the New Testament, water was made into a life-giving symbol. Jesus did this when He was Baptized in the Jordan River. John the Baptist also did this when he baptized people to give them hope for salvation.

The Bread of Life

Like every mass, the Easter Vigil concludes with the sharing of the Eucharist. We receive the body and blood of Jesus. We are joyful because we know that Jesus is risen and is living among us.
Jesus promised the Apostles, "Anyone who eats My Flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day."

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thine intercession was left unaided. The Way of the Cross

The way of the Cross is a traditional practice of thinking devoutly about the suffering death and Resurrection of Jesus. When we go through the way of the Cross, we remember that our sins caused Jesus to suffer and die. We also remember that Jesus' passion continuous today in the suffering humanity.

After Vatican II, many theologians suggested that the Resurrection be included to express the Paschal Mystery more fully. Some Theologians also proposed that the different stations reflect death. Thus, some included new sequences. Others kept the traditional sequence and merely added a fifteen station for the Resurrection.

The Booklet Presence: Prayer for busy People published by Saint Paul's Publications in 1991 has fourteen stations.

The pamphlet issued by Worlds and Life Publication in 1992 also has fourteen stations. Note the similarities and the differences between the two.

God Given us Intellect

Through our intellect, we can see God in the things around us and in the universe. discover God in the things fashioned by human hands like the computer, communications by satellite, the sewing machine and etc. Also we can see the needs of others around us and give the right kind of help. We can get the proper guidance and the courage and strength to solve problems and make the right decisions.

Recognizing our utter dependence on the Creator is a source of wisdom and freedom for us. So let us use our intellect well as a means of thanks and praise to God for His wisdom. the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Prudent are all who live by it, His praise endures forever.( Psalm 111-10). The beginning of God's Kingdom begins......on earth and depends on human cooperation with the grace of God.

Jesus Is Scouraged and Crowned with Thorns

Pilate asked the crowd, " What am i to do with Jesus, the so-called Messiah?" They all shouted, "Crucify Him!" He said "Why? What crime He committed?" But they shouted even louder, "Crucify Him!"

After having Jesus scourged, Pilate delivered Him to be crucified. Then, the soldiers, weaving a crown of thorns, fixed it on His head, and stuck a reed in His right hand. Then, they began to mock Him by dropping to their knees before Him, saying, "hail, King of the Jews!"

Reflection.Think of Jesus, silently enduring the injury inflicted on Him and the mockery of the mad mob and Roman soldiers. Then think of the millions of exploited people suffering silently the oppressions done by the ruthless. What have we done-- what can we do to minimize blatant injustice

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

The high priest stood up before the court and interrogated Jesus: "Are You the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?" Then Jesus answered: "I am. And you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Almighty and coming with the clouds of heaven." At that, the high priest tore His robes and said," What further need do we have of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy. What is your verdict?" They all concurred in the verdict guilty, with its sentence of death.
As soon as it was daybreak, the chief priest, with the elders and scribes, bound Jesus, led Him away, and handed Him over to Pilate.

Reflection. Think of the injustice done to Jesus by biased judges. Then think of the thousands of victims of injustice in whom Jesus continues to live and suffer. Do we, ourselves, contribute to the suffering of the weak, the defenseless and the voiceless of society?

Jesus Prays in Gethsemani

Jesus went out and made His way as was His custom, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples accompanied Him. On reaching the place, He said to them, "pray that you may not be put to the test." He withdrew from with them about a stone's throw, then went down on His knees and prayed in these words: "Father if it is Your will, take this cup from Me; yet not My will but Yours be done." In His anguish, He prayed with even greater intensity, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. Then He rose from prayer and came to His disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted with grief.

My Bible Words

Mt. Horeb- the mountain where God made Himself known to Moses. It is also known as Mt. Sinai.

Pharaoh- the title of the ruler of Ancient Egypt.

Jesus Institutes the Eucharist

The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and after He had given thanks, broke it and said,"This is My Body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me." In the same way, after the supper, He took the cup, saying, "This is cup is the New Covenant in My Blood. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me."

Every time, then, you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes!

Reflection. Think of the times we have failed to appreciate Jesus' gift of self and His loving presence in Eucharist. What can we do to respond to Jesus' sacrifice?

Sins Against the Holy Spirit

The sins against the Holy Spirit are:

  1. loss of hope (despair of salvation)
  2. presumption upon the mercy of God (belief that one is saved without effort)
  3. denial or impugning of the truths of faith
  4. envy of another's spiritual progress or good
  5. obstinacy in sin that follows from a complete lack of penitence
  6. final impenitence, which is the persistence to the close of one's life without sorrow or penitential advertence to the goodness of God

All of these sins demonstrate a personal resistance to the grace and the forgiveness of sins

Cathechism for Filipino Catholics

... Taken as a symbolic acts, sacraments are performative word events-like Jesus' own ministry of words and deeds- real happenings that make present the spiritual reality they express.

The Word of God

We listen to the readings from the Bible. The readings remind us of God's saving love and of His promise to send a Messiah. They also remind us of all the good things God has done for us. We respond by singing psalms about God.

The Apostles must have been sad and frightened after the death of Jesus. To forget their sadness and fear, they must have exchanged stories about the things Jesus told them in the past. They must have sung psalms, too, to keep their spirits up.

Prayer

And Your strenght make them well again.

For You have given them a share
in Your passion.

You are Lord forever and ever.
Amen.

The Sacrament Of Forgiveness

Sin command after Baptism can be forgiven through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The absolution of sin paves our way to God's Kingdom.

The Unbelieving Thomas

Thomas, one of the Twelve Apostles, was not with them when Jesus came after His Ressurection. The other disciples, therefore, said to him, "We have seen the Lord."

But Thomas said to them, " I will never belive it without the proving the nailprints in His hands, without putting my finger in the nailmarks, and my hand into His side."

A week later, the disciples were once more in the room, and this time, Thomas was with them. Despite the locked doors, Jesus came and stood before them.

"Peace be with you," He said. Then to Thomas He said, "Take your finger and examine my hands. Put your hand into My side. Do not persist in your unbelief but believe!"

Thomas answered,"My Lord and My God!"

Jesus said to him," Because you have seen Me, you believed. Blessed are they who have not seen, and yet have believed."

The Ten Commandments

The Lord, your God, who brought you out of Egypt where you were slaves :

  1. You shall have no God expect Me.
  2. You shall not misuse My name.
  3. You shall keep holy the Sabbath Day.
  4. You shall respect your father and your mother.
  5. You shall not kill.
  6. You shall not give yourself to impurity.
  7. You shall not steal.
  8. You shall not accuse anyone falsely.

The Birthday of the Church

The Descent of the Holy Spirit. On the day of Pentecost, the Apostles were gathered in the upper room. Suddenly, from up in the sky, there came a noise like a strong driving wind which was heard all through the house where they were seated. Tongues of fire appeared, which parted and came to rest on each of them. All the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to express themselves in foreign tongues and to make bold proclamations as prompted by the Holy Spirit.

Signs of God's Grace

The Scripture, Mk 10:17-21, is an affirmation of our role as sacraments of the Risen Lors. We know already that Jesus is the perfect revelation of God's love to all people. We also know that we unite ourselves to Jesus in His death and Resurrection so we might be freed from our sins, be called to eternal life, and be sharers in the fellowship of the Trinity. By continuing the works of Jesus we become signs of God's grace - living signs of God's love.

By uniting ourselves to Jesus and His mission in this life, we beleive that we will be together with Him in the eternal life to come.

Is Anyone Sick? (Jas 5:14-15)

Is Anyone of you sick?
You must call in the presbyters of the church
And have them pray over you
While they anoint you with oil
In the name of the Lord.
That prayer, said with faith,
Will save you -- the sick person
And the Lord will restore you to health.
If you have committed sins,
They will be forgiven.

A Date With Jesus

"Come and join us," Cynthia called out to her classmate, Josie. Cynthia was with a big group of boys and girls of her age. They were all carrying large bundles of clothes, toys and food .

"Where?" called back Josie.

"We have a date with Jesus," said Cynthia. "We're going to meet Him today at the Relief and Refugee Center."

"What are those things you have with you?" Josie asked.

"These are our gifts for Jesus," the group of boys and girls chorused.

"Come on," urged Cynthia. "Help us make Jesus happy."

"I don't quite understand what you're talking about but I'll see you there in a few minutes," answered Josie gamely. "I'll still bundle up a few things to take to the Center."

"And call up a few more friends to join us," thought Josie as she picked up the telephone.

For the Lamb before the throne
will be their shepherd and
will guide them to the springs of living waters,
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.

My Jesus,
Though You need no one to help You,
You have granted me the privilege
of being a light for others so that
they can gain eternal salvation.
Help me not to fail You in this
all-important work.

Give me the grace to always see the deeper,
eternal importance of my daily life.

Let my thoughts, desires and intentions
center around You every moment of the day.

Help me obtain for people in all conditions of life,
actual graces which may make a difference
between their eternal salvation and their
eternal loss.

Keep before me eyes the grand world-wide mission
You have laid before me.

Amen.
